    Improving Primary English (IPE)
    This online course, originally developed at Masters level, enables you to improve subject knowledge and engage critically with current thinking and approaches to teaching Primary English in order to improve literacy in your class/school. You will have the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge, analyse data, examine teaching, collect and analyse the work of pupils to provide evidence on which to base your ‘improvement’ plan. You may choose a specific aspect of English / Literacy to develop or improve, based on either a personal professional need or an aspect of your SEF / SIP.

  • Course Organisation and Requirements
    Improving Primary English is an online course, delivered via our Support4Schools virtual learning environment where all course resources, including video tutorials are provided. Participants maintain contact with the tutor via email and through online meetings. You can interact with other course participants using the forums on the eLearning site. The eLearning area also contains a number of resources such as record sheets, analysis sheets, teaching materials, book lists and links to useful websites and articles. To access the eLearning site and online meetings you require a computer with internet access and speakers / headphones, or a smartphone or tablet with the relevant apps installed. Course requirements include some workbased tasks related to your identified area of literacy focus. They are designed to fit in with your work commitments to minimise the amount of any additional work. The course takes place over a 10 month period from the time you enrol, with online meetings held once a month. On successful completion of the course candidates will receive a course completion certificate.
    Course Duration
    Access to the course materials, Tutor and eLearning area is for a 12 month period. There are monthly online meetings, usually organised at 16:30 for approximately one hour but the time can be changed with agreement of the participants. These online meetings are the only fixed times for candidates to attend. The meetings are recorded and distributed to all candidates so if a candidate is unable to attend the meeting they will be able to watch the recording and ask any questions via email. The tutor presentations are through ‘video tutorials’ placed on the eLearning site. This enables candidates to access the training at a time of their choosing, the videos can be played as many times as the candidate requires. The tasks are planned to fit in with teachers’ work requirements. There is a forum area allowing participants to share information and ask questions.
    Course Tutor
    Sue McCaldon (M.A. in Teaching) is our specialist tutor for the Course. She has vast experience of developing Literacy programmes. Her past experience includes being a LA Senior School Improvement Officer with responsibility for Literacy and Manager for the National Literacy Project in Manchester. She was a co-author of various Reading Intervention Programmes and has contributed to books and TV programmes for schools.
