Text: Journey to Jo'burg
Week 8 Plan: Journey to Jo'burg
This powerful text, set in South Africa, tells the story of a young girl and her sister on a journey to find their mother, who had been forced to live apart from them. The contrast between the lives of back and white people at this time, illustrates the issue and the lasting damage caused by apartheid. This book provides a good model for discussion and debate and gives opportunities for pupils to present their opinions in preparation for independent writing.

Week 9 Plan: No Turning Back

Written by Beverley Naidoo. Cover illustrator: unknown
ISBN 0-14-036948-1 Published by Penguin Books Ltd

Set in modern day South Africa, the story tells of a young black boy who runs away from home to escape the cruelty of his stepfather. Initially living with other young black boys on the streets of Johannesburg, he then becomes involved with a white family. Eventually he seeks refuge in a shelter. Another powerful and thought provoking text, which illustrates continuing racism, coupled with glimpses of hope for future generations.
